The first stop on the mission to the Dominican Republic is at the ILAC (Institution for Latin American Concern) mission. The prospective patients arrive very early to meet with the doctors. The doctors evaluate patients on type of surgery needed (hip or knee) and assign a rating from 1 to 10 with a 10 being a definite candidate. Among the considerations are the severity of the injury, do we have the instruments to do the surgery, and do we have the correct implants available. The majority of candidates come from ILAC, the rest will be chosen at the Juan Bosch clinic tomorrow.
